Hedda takes a gun to her head...
O phoned me a question tonight as I watched the election results: when does Hedda Gabler take a gun to her head? When is the dramatic turning point?
If I was the actress playing Hedda Gabler at this moment, watching the election results at 249 to 242 in favor of Bush versus Kerry, I'd be close to pointing that pistol on my head. The dramatic turning point? Ohio.
By the time I publish this entry, all things will still be too close to call and the drama of this country's future will still be hanging in the balance.
Not using Ibsen but rather the words of Trevor Bechtel Hedda speaks her penultimate lament:
There are three things that are of primary importance to me in an election.
We need a leader who is willing to take an approach to economic growth that is sustainable for all of the earth's people.
We need a leader who is concerned for the least among us, the disenfranchized, the oppressed.
We need a leader who is not interested in empire, who doesn't think it is possible to be confident about God's will, and who is at least nervous about how big the military is.
On all of these counts Kerry and Bush fail famously. I will lose the election today.
Still, as a resident alien concerned in whatever ways possible with the welfare of the people who also live in Ohio, I hope and pray that Kerry wins.
Ohio: save me from my own pistol.
